Australia introduced a new occupational eye and face protection standard in 2026.

For PPE brands and safety eyewear suppliers, AS 16321.1:2026 is an important update to understand, especially for new products entering the Australian market.

What Is AS 16321.1:2026?

AS 16321.1:2026 – Eye and face protection for occupational use, Part 1: General requirements was published on May 29, 2026.

It is a modified adoption of ISO 16321-1:2021, bringing Australia’s safety eyewear requirements closer to the international ISO 16321 framework.

This also means the new Australian standard shares the same international foundation as the newer European EN ISO 16321 system, although regional requirements are not identical.

What Happens to AS/NZS 1337.1?

The existing AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 does not disappear immediately.

A 36-month transition period applies from publication of the new standards, during which AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 and several related standards remain current.

For PPE brands developing new safety eyewear, this transition period is important when deciding which standard to use for new testing programs.

What Should PPE Brands Do Now?

For new products intended for the Australian market, it is worth considering AS 16321.1:2026 early in the development process rather than automatically starting with the older AS/NZS 1337.1 framework.

The appropriate testing route should still be confirmed with the relevant laboratory or certification body based on the product and launch timing.

At Greatland, we can assist with safety eyewear development and arrange third-party testing according to the applicable Australian requirements.
